General Observations
The Name
Mammillaria is the type genus of the family Cactaceae. This means that botanists think that its characteristics are typical of the family as a whole.
The name is interesting. It comes from the Latin word mammilla, which means breast..
If you look at a few Mammillaria pictures, you will notice protuberances that look like the nipples of a breast. This undoubtedly inspired the genus name. For the same reason, some species have the phrase nipple cactus
in their common name. For example, M. nivosa is called the woolly nipple cactus.
