WHETHER WE BELIEVE IN THE SUPERNATURAL OR NOT, IT'S APPARENT THAT THINGS WORK OUTSIDE THE REALM OF OUR UNDERSTANDING
Chapter 1 The Break In
Blue lights flashed as Ralph Little Eagle pulled up to the museum. Ralph was the police chief on the Hopi reservation near Flagstaff, Arizona. April Snow was standing in front of the shattered window waiting with her arms crossed, so mad she was crying. As soon as Ralph's boots hit the dust, she was in his face, yelling.
April was the curator at the archaeological museum which housed the Hopi artifacts collected on the reservation and from the nearby Blue Canyon. It was a great tourist attraction and invited much needed income onto the reservation. That's what we get for letting outsiders come in here!
she screamed.
Ralph was trying to quit smoking, so he stuck a toothpick in his mouth and sat his hat on his head. He was slow, methodical in everything he did, which really frustrated April. He sat back against the warm grill of his truck and looked around at the scene, picking dried blood off a scrape on his arm.
Well?
demanded April. Are you just going to sit there?
The chief nodded, My deputy will be here in a minute.
April grew frustrated and screamed, Do you need him to wipe your...?
Chief Little Eagle cut her off. Just settle down, April.
They heard brakes squeal and turned to see the new deputy pull up. Joseph Green had only been working about three weeks, but he was eager and a quick learner. He had been an Army Ranger and had just completed a tour in Iraq.
Loloma, April!
he called, pulling on his latex gloves so he could begin searching for evidence.
Little Eagle started a list of stolen items; a spear, a peace pipe, two Hopi masks, a medicine bag and staff, a headdress and a tomahawk, all belonging to the same Shaman.
Tokoch had been a great leader of the Hopi tribe and a shaman with strong medicine, and April's great grandfather. As Little Eagle's list grew, so did April's anger. The implications of the specific items stolen were troubling to her.
Joseph looked around, searching the area for physical evidence and found tire marks, which he photographed. He stopped to look at the window and found a brick lying right inside. He checked out the broken pane and found a speck of blood. Apparently the burglar cut himself climbing in. He broke off the shard with the blood and put it in the evidence bag. He also scooped the brick up into a bag.
As he walked around, he found a cigarette butt and bagged it. Now they could compare the DNA from the blood and cigarette. They got a partial shoe print. He photographed everything, then Little Eagle allowed the window to be changed.
Contact the pawn shops, but I don't think this is random stuff to be pawned. There were more expensive things that weren't touched. This is going to a private buyer,
Ralph told his rookie. Joseph concurred.
I'll contact the State Police, but they don't much care about what happens on the rez,
Ralph told April.
So we're just supposed to forget about this? Just sweep it away like the broken glass and pretend it didn't happen?
Ralph sighed and shook his head. He moved his toothpick from one side of his mouth to the other with his tongue. That's not what I said, April. But you know we don't have any jurisdiction on the outside and the state boys have more important things to worry about.
Ralph climbed back into his Bronco and pulled the door shut. April was fuming. She started swearing as he drove away.
Joseph walked up and dropped the evidence bags into the seat of his truck. We'll do all we can, April, but we're limited in money and power.
April leaned back against Joe's truck and propped her foot on the tire. "Don't you even care, Joseph? That
