Growing Up in Orange County
My father and mother met in Hollywood in the 1940’s and were married in Las Vegas. In classic Hollywood, Dezi Arnez and Lucille Ball were at the peak of their celebrity, and oddly, my parents resembled them. My father was a handsome Spaniard and my mother, a milky white, freckled redhead who lived in a ramshackle house right on Hollywood Blvd, before the rural feel of the area was taken over by glamour.
When things were especially difficult at home, I found ways to escape to put some distance between my family and me. Almost all adults were drinking and
