Chapter One
Charlie gritted his teeth. He’d never understand where he’d thought signing over his rights and likeness for promotion to Space Co. was a smart idea. But he’d done it. We need a hook, they said. A reason to get eyeballs tuning into the liftoff, they told him. Wasn’t the mission to the moon enough? Sure, humans had been there a few times, but had the mystery really worn off? Already?
He sat backstage in the flimsy mock spacesuit and waited for the trio of women to arrive. A bachelor type show, promoting space and relationships. That’d get eyeballs...and him laughed out of the company. Jesus.
Space Co. had done two other television shows about the mission, had a web series about prep for the liftoff and even a contest for civilians to ride along on the mission. They didn’t need a dating show. He’d never meet the woman of his dreams on a dating program.
The guy with the headset ducked into the room. Two minutes to air. We’ll be live.
He grinned and adjusted the mic. How’s it feel to be Single in Space? Cool?
No.
He hated it. I wasn’t trying to land a date.
None of them are.
He flipped through the pages on his clipboard. It’s all a setup to make money. The girls get a chance at being the main character on the next season and money. You get spotlighted for the space program and that sweet ride. Did you like the ‘Vette?
I have a nice car.
He loved his Jeep, but the Corvette was nice.
So? Now you have two.
The production assistant nodded. One minute.
Can I back out now?
He wasn’t cut out for this. He’d been called too shy for his own good. He was hungry to fly and visit space. He didn’t need to find a girl. He’d had one and she’d dumped him because she swore he loved flying more than her.
She’d been wrong. She’d been his first and only love. Flying was his obsession, but she was his love. Big difference.
And...we’re live. When I point to you—go to the center of the set. There’s a couch and a set of stone steps. You can sit or stand. Just stay in that area.
The assistant producer opened the door for him. Go.
Or I could leave. Sure.
Most of the other guys cannot wait to get out there,
the assistant muttered.
I’m not most guys.
He waited for his cue, then trudged up to the steps. He couldn’t sit if he tried. The suit would rip and the façade would be gone. Jesus. He spied the three women he’d been told to choose from. Each woman was pretty and dressed in an evening gown. Not bad, but none were his type. The women might not be fake, but the situation? Yeah. Totally fake.
The announcer, a man with slicked blond hair and a form-fitting suit held onto a mic. He babbled away, describing the premise of the show. Moments later, he introduced the women. Kenzi, Marigold and Lisa.
Which one of you will tame the Single going to Space?
the announcer asked. He held the smile until the assistant with the clap board signaled
