A Simple Step by Step Guide to the Muslim Prayer - Dr. Muddassir Khan
PREFACE
Bismillahir Rahmaanir Raheem—In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
This book is based on the Quran and the authentic statements of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Abdul Karim Saqib (Allah have mercy on them).

The Messenger sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: If there was a river at the door of anyone of you and he took a bath in it five times a day, would you notice any dirt on him?
They said, Not a trace of dirt would be left.
The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, added, That is the example of the five prayers with which Allah blots out evil deeds.
Step 1
This step requires you to memorize a few Arabic phrases and verses. The prayer can only be said in Arabic. With constant repetition, you will gradually memorize these phrases without any difficulty.
1—Allahu Akbar
2—A’udhu billahiminash-shaytanir-rajeem
3—Bismillahir-rahmanir-raheem
4—First chapter of the Quran (Surah Al-Fatiha):
‘Al-hamdu lillahi rabbil-alameen.
Ar-rahmanir-raheem.
Maaliki yawmid-deen.
Iyyaka na’budu wa iyyaka nasta’een.
Ihdinas-siratal-mustaqeem.
Siratal-ladheena an’amta ‘alayhim. ghayril-maghdhubi ‘alayhim wa ladh-dhalleen.’
5—Ameen
6—Subhana rabbi al-’atheem
7—Sami’ Allahu liman hamidah
8—Rabbana wa lakal-hamd
9—Subhana rabbi al-a’la
10—Rabbigh fir lee
11—The Tashahud:
‘At-tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat.
As-salamu ‘alayka ayyuhan-nabiyyu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.
As-salamu ‘alayna wa’ala ‘ibadillahia-saliheen.
Ash-hadu al-la ilaha ill-Allahu
wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa rasuluh.’
12—Salutations on the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam,:
Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammadin wa ‘ala aali Muhammadin
kama sallayta ‘ala Ibraheema wa ‘ala aali Ibraheema,
innaka hameedum-majeed.
Wa barik ‘ala Muhammadin wa ‘ala aali Muhammadin
kama barakta ‘ala Ibraheema wa ‘ala aali Ibraheema,
innaka hameedum-majeed
13—As-salamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullah
So, these 13 phrases and verses are all that is required to pray. Later after mastering them you can learn other phrases and verses from the Quran gradually.
Step 2
Now we will learn how to pray a 2 unit prayer such as the morning (Fajr) prayer.
Al-hamdu lillahi rabbil-alameen.
Ar-rahmanir-raheem.
Maaliki yawmid-deen.
Iyyaka na’budu wa iyyaka nasta’een.
Ihdinas-siratal-mustaqeem.
Siratal-ladheena an’amta ‘alayhim. ghayril-maghdhubi ‘alayhim wa ladh-dhalleen
Since you are praying 2 units of prayer after reciting Tashahud you should complete the prayer by reciting the salutations on the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.
Step 3
The compulsory prayers are five—Fajr, Dhur, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha. You can know the timings of the prayer in your location from the application ‘My prayer’. Fajr consists of two units of prayer and can be prayed in the way described in Step 2. Dhur, Asr, and Isha consist of four units of prayer. Maghrib consists of three units. So, the total units of compulsory prayers in the day are seventeen (2+4+4+3+4).
To pray a 4 unit prayer you should pray the first 2 units similar to the 2 unit prayer until the Tashahud. After reciting the Tashahud stand up for the third unit of prayer from the sitting position by saying, ‘Allahu Akbar.’ Raise your hands after the second unit when standing up and then place them on the chest. The third and fourth units of prayer are similar to
