ORIENTATION
When asked the question, To which direction does the needle of a compass point?
most people will respond with the seemingly obvious answer, north.
While this may be correct in a general sense, it is incorrect in regard to True North.
To determine True North one must, depending upon where they are located, adjust their compass and course of travel by calculating the difference between True North and a geographic area called Magnetic North. Even in a relatively short distance of 10 miles the failure to do so will result in missing one’s precise destination.
In the same way, we often find ourselves guided by our emotions and desires rather than the truth of God’s Word. There are times, for example, we may repeatedly ask God’s forgiveness because we feel bad because of what we have done; or because we do not feel forgiven. However, the truth is, When we admit our sin, God can be relied upon to forgive us for our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness
1 John 1:9. Despite how we feel we can accept or adjust to God’s truth then determine our course of direction by living and acting according to His truth. This, rather than our feelings, will lead us in the path to freedom and righteousness. May this Field Guide serve as an instrument to assist you and others to walk in the truth and pursue the freedom Christ promised and secured for us at the cross.
The foundation for a life of discipleship and ministry include the following three principles that are outlined in the first three chapters of this guide.
1. Relying on the Holy Spirit’s counsel and power
2. Utilizing Jesus’ power and authority as an ambassador of Christ
3. Declaring and asserting God’s truth
1
RELYING ON THE HOLY SPIRIT’S COUNSEL AND POWER
Like Jesus, the disciples lived, ministered, and were guided and empowered by the Holy Spirit in very practical ways. They were empowered to understand, speak, and preach God’s Word, to heal the sick, and to free people from the influences of Satan and the power of sin. They were also guided, warned, and made decisions as a result of His counsel and leading. In this Field Guide we will rely on the Holy Spirit’s counsel and power in the following ways:
• To guide us into truth, and to lead and counsel us.
• For direction and discernment when gathered together in His presence.
• To pray and minister in the power of God.
• To live in obedience and walk in the light of His truth.
• To remain in Christ and rely on Him and His resources.
• To uncover the origin of negative patterns of thinking, feeling and behavior.
• To recognize and acknowledge the truth about what is, what has happened and how we feel.
• To reveal, experience, and heal our emotions.
• To live in and minister the freedom of Christ to others.
The term Interactive Prayer will be used to describe the personal dialogue or interaction we have with God, through the presence of the Holy Spirit, the person(s) we are praying with and ourselves.
Jesus and His disciples clearly model for us a lifestyle of relying on the Spirit of God in them and with them, as they follow Christ and carry out His mission. In the Book of Acts we observe the interaction between the early believers and the Holy Spirit, as they are learning to live for the first time without the physical presence of Jesus among them. We notice the ways Jesus communicates with them through the Holy Spirit, as they gather to inquire of Him and purpose to live for Him.
The term Interactive Prayer will be used to describe the personal dialogue or interaction we have with God, through the presence of the Holy Spirit, the person(s) we are praying with and ourselves. We are asking God, who is present by His Spirit, to lead and counsel us as we go. As we ask, we learn to listen and respond to His counsel and what He reveals to those involved. The foundation for this approach are the words and ministry of Jesus Christ characterized in the Gospel of John, chapter 16.
"But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on His own; He will speak only what He hears, and He will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to Me by taking from what is Mine and making it known to you. All that belongs to the Father is Mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is Mine and make it known to you." John
