      A Moment of Madness – Child Star to Armed Robber?

      The Disney Corporation Mission Statement aims for the organisation ‘to be one of the world's leading producers and providers of entertainment and information.’  Adam Hicks certainly contributed to that as an actor and artist.  But, it appears that a moment of madness turned him from skateboarding star to emotionless robber.  In those moments, any entertainment was warped and his alleged actions terrifying.  Now he awaits trial, his reputation as a burgeoning success savaged by one day of recklessness.

      His alleged crimes, including holding elderly women at gunpoint, appear inexplicable.  This was a young man who seemingly had everything; a stable relationship, wealth, fame and the choice of making a career in acting, in music or in a combination of both.  Instead, he runs the risk of spending the vast majority of his remaining life behind bars.

      Hicks was born into a comfortable home in Las Vegas, Nevada.  He was the eldest child, born on the 28th of November 1992.  He would gain a sibling, Tristan, five years later.  His father Ron and mother Lucy were keen from the outset to support their eldest as he showed interest in acting and performing.  In a house full of animals – cats and dogs were much loved pets - he passed through his early years and started school. 

      Young Adam was keen to show off his theatrical skills there and was soon cast in a production of Tom Sawyer.  In the audience was a local talent scout who was impressed by the quality of the boy’s acting, his freckle faced innocent looks and his commitment.  With the support of his parents, Adam began to perform in and around Las Vegas.  He was only seven when his talents reached the ears of the makers of Titus, an offbeat dark comedy show broadcast on Fox.  They were looking for somebody to become the five-year-old version of Titus’ half-brother, Dave,  played by  Zach Ward.  He had distinctive looks, with sharp ginger hair.  Young Adam was ideal and demonstrated a maturity and physical talent for the part.  The comedy was cutting edge, following an unusual sit-com format which began with the adult Titus (stand-up comedian Christopher Titus) delivering a monologue in a black and white, cell like room.  During this element, flash backs to his childhood would be shown, and these often featured the five-year-old Titus and his half-brother.  The role was small, but a good starting point for a young actor with big ambitions. It  also provided regular work and commitment, with the character appearing in eighteen episodes between 2000 and 2002. The show ended when Adam was ten.

      When young Adam left the series, bits and pieces of work followed.  He won a small role in the TV series ‘That Was Then’, with his character listed as ‘Boy in Classroom’.  Another minor part followed in The Funhousers, a TV movie. Then, aged twelve, he got a bigger break, playing the son of the lead in Down and Derby, a low budget TV movie about a group of over competitive dads participating in a local derby.  Again, it was a strong performance by young Adam, perhaps the strongest in the film among the juvenile cast.  He was subsequently cast in a major role in another low budget made for children film, The 12 Dogs of Christmas.  Next keeping the canine theme, he won a significant part in the film Shaggy Dog, which starred Tim Allen and Kristin Davis.  He was heading upwards in the world of made for TV films.

      But Adam’s reputation would be secured in his following film, where he played the leading role of the bully, Joe, in How to Eat Fried Worms.  This film showed to a much wider audience, and although critics’ reviews were mixed, it was at least big enough to earn such reviews.  It also won Adam, along with his fellow young actors, the prize of Best Young Ensemble in a Feature Film.

      By now Adam was fourteen, and moderately well known.  He was developing his interests, rapping, writing songs, playing the drums and also skateboarding.  His next work was in 2008 when he played a biggish role in an adaptation of the works of RL Stine, Mostly Ghostly.  Entering his older teens Hicks got his biggest break.  In 2009 the sixteen-year-old was cast as joint lead in the Disney series Zeke and Luther.  He played the role of Luther.  The series, which ran for three years and seventy-seven episodes followed the skateboarding exploits of the two eponymous teens.  It proved to be one of the Disney Channel’s biggest successes, winning one and being nominated for a further eight awards, although
