    I am going to give you time to do that while I sit here in my sunny breakfast nook, in the kitchen of my third-floor apartment, sip my coffee and consider … other things. I am going to consider why I never took up smoking. Smoking seems like it would be the perfect thing to do right now. I could sit here with my coffee, in front of me an overflowing ashtray, the top few inches of my housecoat open revealing the yellowed, tattered, lace of my slip. The fingers of my right hand, nicotine stained and shaking as I bring the burning cigarette to my lips. Perhaps I still have the remnants of lipstick on. Some distant shade of pale pink name flower petal or dusky rose, some reminder of the attempts I made last night, in the dark of a bar, to catch me a man.

    I’d suck on the cigarette, hold the smoke and then exhale while I thoughtfully stubbed it out in the ashtray, displacing the evidence of other mornings like this one, other day after nights like the one I was recovering from. Headache, body shivers, hung over with drink and dehydration and, possibly, shame. I would instinctively pull another cigarette from the pack on the table. A pack of Marlboro’s or Salems or Camels, who knows. The pack would be ensconced in a lime yellow,
