Preface
This power quality reference book
is being written at the request of many linemen, engineers, engineering techs, troublemen, key account managers, safety officers, customer service reps, meter techs, and many others I have taught in my Power Quality & Reliability classes or who I have met throughout the country during my career.
In this introductory book, my goal is to explain very complex subjects in layman’s terms, and I am thankful God has blessed me with the ability, opportunity, and platform to share this information. Additionally, my real-world case studies will illustrate various situations, problems, and resolutions.
My second book will dive much deeper into the technical side of power quality, where in most cases the problems and solutions are found, and will present more in-depth case studies. Also, once you have read this Introduction to Power Quality, the second book will be that much easier to understand.
I have been in many meetings and seminars with those having varied levels of knowledge, experience, and skill in this field, and I have looked around the room and could tell that many were lost in the complexity of the subject matter.
My basic approach to explaining power quality and reliability has been extremely popular over many years, and I hope you will gain some useful knowledge from my simplified approach to explaining this complex subject matter, as well.

Chapter 1
Safety Basics
Safety is the most important
aspect of most any job. Although your level of necessary caution will depend primarily upon your particular job duties, please take safety seriously all the time. Ultimately, your safety is in your hands, and there is no room for shortcuts in this area.
I know the fire-resistant (FR) shirts and pants are hot, especially in the southern states during the summer, and the electrical hazard (EH) rated boots and overshoes are heavy and hard to walk in at times, but they are necessary for a reason: TO KEEP YOU SAFE!
The goal is to return home every day in the same condition you left that morning. I know from experience what it is like to leave the parking lot at the end of a day while your friend and co-worker’s truck is still there—because he will not be driving it home ever again.
I have lost two friends to linework over the years, and it is something that will stay with me forever. Linework is an extremely dangerous position which takes a very special person. I could go on and on about safety, but my advice is that you play a major role in your own safety; you must take ownership of it and realize whether you return home each day depends an enormous amount upon how seriously you take your own safety practices.
Test your high-voltage gloves daily.
Take time to discuss your job with your crew and what each person is going to be doing.
Ask if each person understands their role; do not simply assume that they understand it.
Talk about possible safety issues for that specific job, and ask for input from your crew.
