KATSUSHIKA HOKUSAI

Katsushika Hokusai is the most famous of a sequence of names used by a versatile and long-lived Japanese artist who worked in many genres and schools, absorbing techniques from both inside and outside his own culture. In this way, he evolved a unique style and became a true master, creating new forms in the various media in which he worked. Hokusai’s name changes mirrored spiritual, artistic, and physical developments in his own life. He was an unusual and restless man who slipped boundaries and made fresh connections, yet never sought great wealth or position, staying true to himself and to his art.
Even for such a long career his output was staggering. He produced over 30,000 different designs, prints, illustrations, paintings, and sketches. Hokusai is particularly known for transforming the traditional one-dimensional landscape color woodblock print with perspective. This evolution made him seem radical and almost foreign to his countrymen, because conventional Japanese appreciation was more traditional and restrained.
