      Annabel left it until Saturday afternoon. Two full days. Time for the kids to settle in. Then, in a red, button-up sweater and faded jeans, straight, blonde bobbed hair glossy, make-up subtle, she left her house with a ‘for life’ grocery bag: less plastic, Greta would be pleased…

      The dark-haired twenty-something girl answered the door.

      Hope it’s not a bad time. But I’m a neighbor, Annabel said.

      She pointed to her house across the street and then held up the bag.

      Just a little welcome to the street.

      The girl stared for three or four seconds, blank-faced.

      Then she blurted: Oh, shit … Sorry … I mean hello … And thanks.

      The girl took the bag. She smiled.

      Cate, she said.

      Annabel, Annabel put in.

      She looked at Cate from under a frown.

      Then asked: I hear an accent…

      Cate smiled.

      England. We’re both English, she said.

      Oh, that’s fantastic. Annabel said.

      Cate gave a half-shrug.

      We came here with work.

      Annabel nodded and pointed to the bag.

      I hope wine’s okay. I never know these days. Everyone’s vegan or doesn’t drink … Sometimes it’ a real struggle for me. Girls don’t want to be girls; boys don’t want to be boys…

      She smiled and shrugged.

      Added: Anyways…

      Cate looked into the bag. She nodded, smiling.

      Uh-huh, no problem here. I’m grateful for wine … We’re carnivores … And, well, I’m a girl. Gary’s a guy. We’re happy that way…

      Okay, so his name’s Gary. Is he your boyfriend, husband, cousin? Is he your brother…?

      A pause as Cate glanced over one shoulder.

      Then she looked at Annabel.

      Said: Uhm, so, would you like to come in?

      I don’t want to intrude, Annabel said.

      But I wouldn’t mind getting a closer look at Gary…
