Y ou did what? I wanted to scream at my husband. Trevor had always been good meaning, even when he completely flubbed, but his latest action won the prize for most boneheaded move ever.

Take it easy, Andy, Trevor said, using that tone of voice that I hated. It was like I was the one who was being unreasonable, even though I knew I was well within my right to protest.

The new government program was completely humiliating, even if it was designed to fix several of society's ills. Low birth rates, along with too many women being born, meant the composition of society was off. Societal norms were breaking down.

However, that did not mean I thought Project Enduring Household had any hope of fixing things. It was a voluntary program, so the fact Trevor had signed us up made me want to slap him. There was nothing wrong with us, even though we had been trying to have a baby for years without success. The doctors were flummoxed by our problems just as much as we were.

But after years of trying, I'd given up. Trevor was constantly trying to initiate sex, but I just didn't have my heart in it anymore. And that meant every time Trevor tried, we fought.

Don't tell me to take it easy, I countered. You signed us up to have a stranger come into our house and constantly judge us. To judge me. And you know how it's going to go. As the woman, I'm going to take the blame. They'll tell me I'm not projecting a feminine enough appearance or mindset, that I'm not acting like your sexy little toy whose only desire in life is to be barefoot and pregnant.

Trevor sighed. It's not like that at all. And we both know this program will become mandatory in time. And even if it doesn't work for us, we will help other couples when the program does roll out for everyone.

I was so sure about that. I had my doubts, but there was no doubt that there was some change needed. At our current rate, society would collapse. Even I knew that. But I still didn't like some government official showing up and telling me everything I was doing wrong.

So when does our shadow get here? I asked, realizing
