Introduction: Dutch grammar for beginners
Hallo!
Thanks for buying this book.
It’s designed as a reference book with exercises for beginners. It’s based on my experience teaching Dutch to English speaking foreigners.
These students regularly ask the same questions and have the same grammar issues when learning Dutch. You’ll find these answers and issues in this book.
Where possible, I added exercises for which you will find the solutions at the end of the book.
Even though certain topics will be a bit advanced, some of the explanations will be simplified. Dutch is a language of exceptions.
Some topics won’t even be ‘pure’ grammar, but have some rules and that’s why I included them.
The chapters are grouped as follows:
Pronouns
Verbs (plus the negative)
Conjunctions and word order
Adjectives
Nouns
Rest
Happy learning,
Alain
1. Pronouns
1.1 Personal pronouns as a subject
The personal pronouns, are similar to the English pronouns. In the table below shows the pronouns as a subject, the person or thing doing the action in the sentence, as in:
• Hij ziet het huis. (He sees the house)
When using the endings with -ij, the pronoun is stressed. Endings with -e do not emphasise it:
• Jij moet dat doen, niet ik! (You have to do it, I don’t)
• Je moet dat doen. (You have to do it, it’s you who has to do it but that fact doesn’t matter much)
She and they both use zij/ze. The conjugation of the verb (see chapter 2.1) will show which one it is:
• Zij drinken. (they drink)
• Zij drinkt. (she drinks)
There are three ways to say you:
• Jij zwemt. (You swim - singular informal)
• U zwemt. (You swim - singular and plural formal)
• Jullie zwemmen. (You swim - plural informal)
‘Het’ is used for it.
• Het is interessant. (It’s interesting)

1.2 The possessive
Just as in English, the possessive shows who owns something:
Uw is used for the formal ‘your’, jouw and je for informal ‘your.’ Jouw is with emphasis, je without:
• Dit is jouw auto. (it is your car, not someone else’s)
• Dit is je auto. (it's your car, no need to stress it’s yours)
Ons is used with nouns taking het as an article, onze with nouns taking de:
• Zie je ons boek? (do you see our book?)
• Daar zijn onze gerechten. (there are our dishes)

1.3 Personal pronouns as objects
Personal pronouns are the pronouns used as an object of the sentence, e.g. He wants me.
Mij, jou and hun are used with emphasis, me, je, ze in the plural without.
• Zie je mij? (Do you see me? The others are less important)
Haar and ze can both be used, ze is used more often in Belgium, haar in the Netherlands.
Het is used for nouns taking het as an article,
