About this ebook

Caleb is the lesser counterpart of Joshua. Together they spied out the land of Canaan before the Israelites entered it. They were the only spies who came back with a good report of the land and encouraged the Israelites to take it as God had promised it to them. The other ten spies frightened the Israelites by saying there were giants in the land and they couldn't possibly fight with giants. As a result, God said that the Israelites would wander in the desert for forty years until all of their generation died except Joshua and Caleb. Their children would be the ones to inherit the promised. Because Joshua and Caleb were part of the nation, they were forced to wander with their disobedient brothers. How did Caleb respond to the hardships, plus the deaths of everyone he had known except Joshua? What promises of God did he count on as reliable?

I like to write, read, teach, sing, play the piano, swim, cook, play in the yard, and walk by the ocean. I prefer coloring books to plain paper, summer to winter, daytime to nightime, and morning to afternoon. I like large families, but I prefer to visit with one friend at a time. I love to study the Bible and discuss what God is doing in the world today, but I can't handle really scary adventure novels. I am more interested in people and animals than in rocks and plants. I tutor reading and writing and prefer second graders. I live with my husband Bill and cat Sasha in the center of California.

    Story Recap

They’re coming, they’re coming! The scout ran down the hill to the Israelite encampment, leaping and shouting as he came.

The camp below echoed the call as one by one the Israelites picked up the joyful news.

Moses rushed out of his tent. He shielded his eyes and looked toward the call of the scout as men grouped around him with whoops of excitement, clapping each other on the back. It had been a long forty days of anxious waiting.

Moses had instructed the twelve spies, each a leader of his tribe, Go. See if the land is good or bad, if the people there are strong or weak, few or many. Search out the towns to see if they are unwalled or fortified. Are there trees? Handle the soil. Is it fertile or poor? And bring back a sample of the fruit growing there.

Then Moses sent them off and those left behind could only wait. Their future depended on the results of this expedition. Coming through the desert hadn’t been easy, but God had led the Israelites. Now, they seemed more robust than when they had started
