    Big Tom

He sat on a sofa overlooking the balcony of the safe house. Small Jay had warned him about the danger of being spotted. It made sense for his older brother to be that paranoid, but he also had to remind him that sitting on the balcony also had its advantage.

I spot the enemy just as he spots me, Big Tom chuckled, making his way past his brother to the balcony.

And what if you spot the enemy last?

Big Tom mulled over the question as he sat there, looking out onto the green street ahead of him. The cluster of palm trees lining the narrow path, leading out into the dusty road to town, wore an aesthetic that Big Tom seemed to be in love with. Maybe it was his intoxicated mind making the all-too-empty path look as appealing as a nature painting in an art gallery.

Big Tom shook his head, signaling the guard that Small Jay had forced on him. Get me my binoculars! he said to the guard. My brother’s idea of safety is not all talk, Big Tom murmured to himself. He had lived long enough to know that, and in his experience, it was the little nothings that could get you killed. It only took one mistake for that to happen.

The guard was back in about a minute. He handed Big Tom the binoculars and resumed his position beside his boss.

Champagne? Big Tom asked. He was feeling a little too gay. It must be the wine, and maybe the return of his first son.

    No, sir, the guard declined.

Pour yourself a shot! Big Tom ordered. He stared at the guard as he started to shake his head in decline. Why not?

    I am on duty, sir.

Oh, that! Big Tom chuckled and returned to the binoculars. Normally, he would have made the guard do his bidding, not minding whose wrath would be incurred. But, today? Today, he was in high spirits and would save the young man from his little pleasure tricks.

Big Tom put the binoculars over his eyes and looked out into the street. The trees were closer; it felt like he could reach out to them after just a few steps. He brought down the binoculars, and chuckled as he took in the long distance to the gate from the house, the small space that hung between the gate and the first tree on the narrow road.

Nature’s beautiful, he mused, replacing the binoculars over his eyes again.

Tommy? Small Jay was back for whatever reason.

"Jay, please make sure you are not here to whine over my safety
