Take Back Your Life - Kate Hayes

    INTRODUCTION

I can still remember everything about that day.

July 4, 1976. My brother and I walked hand in hand to the local park where there was a celebration happening. We could hear live music and laughter as we approached, a whole community together celebrating the Fourth of July. It was the bicentennial celebration, and as a child of seven, I was brimming with excitement!

Can you smell the popcorn and cotton candy? I still can.

But what is most memorable of all?

What is my most perfect memory of that day?

As we looked around, deciding which exciting ride to hit first, I spotted the row of horses waiting to be ridden.

Sure, they were just going around in circles, but these were real live horses. NOT PONIES, HORSES!

I looked up at my big brother, Glenn, who, despite all his friends wanting to take him away from me, was adamant about getting me on one of those horses.

You see, for as long as I can remember, I have loved horses. And that day, that glorious summer day in 1976, my brother was going to make this little girl’s dream come true.

As we got closer and it became apparent how big these horses really were, was I scared?

Absolutely not. The smell of horse not only went into my nose but engrained a place in my heart that very day.

He lifted me up into the saddle and I rode around in circles, feeling like I was in the process of winning a gold medal at the Summer Olympics. I remember waving furiously every time I passed him on my trip around the circle. And that day, that very day, I knew what it meant to have a goal.

This very day was the day That I declared: I am going to have a horse in my backyard!

Now, for a girl who grew up in the south suburbs of Chicago, this may have seemed a little far-fetched. But I guarantee you, I never lost sight of that dream no matter how far my life took me from that day or from my brother. The dream of looking out my window and seeing a horse in my backyard has never left me. You might have picked up this book thinking we were going to talk all about business, all about goals, all about habits and reaching your next level—of making that quantum leap. But reaching your goals in business Is only part of what we’re going to talk about.

Because what good is reaching your goals in business if you can’t reach any goals in your personal life, as well? That is what I have discovered. As a successful salesperson, thought leader, trainer, coach, and entrepreneur, I woke up one morning and discovered I was closer to fifty than I was to thirty. Yes. Fifty years old. Do you know what I still did not have? Do you know what I never saw when I looked out my window? Yes. You guessed it. A horse. Knowing this, I felt a sinking sensation in my belly.

Even as I write this, even knowing how far I had come, not only in my business, but in working within the businesses of others, with the many, many successes I have enjoyed, something was missing. I’ve studied personal and professional development for so long—long enough that I could teach it to others. But this one thing was missing. The goal of a small girl now turned into a woman was unfulfilled.

This realization led me to dive into everything I had learned over the previous three decades of working within the scope of leadership, personal and professional development, time management, scheduling tips and tricks, and a basic theory of life’s principles that I had tested at some point in the past. Because, I said, as you may have, I’ve tried everything. Why is it that after dedicated practice of assorted time management systems, ferocious goal setting, and ‘persistence,’ I still have not reached this most basic goal that I have had most of my entire life?

The truth is that nothing, I mean not one thing, had worked for me 100 percent of the time, all the time. So, I began to believe that it was not possible. Maybe this just wasn’t meant for me.

Thank goodness I chose not to believe that!

I knew I needed to create something that worked for me. Something that was flexible enough to handle changes to the schedule when they came up. Flexible enough to allow me to put out fires when they started. Flexible enough to be responsive to other people’s mismanagement of their schedules.

This book contains the blueprint of how I made this quantum leap from a person who I would call an organized planner to a thriving, limitless thought leader, and yes, horse owner!

But this journey of creation not only moved me to realize the dream of that small girl I once was, but it also helped me realize my dreams to be a successful speaker, author, entrepreneur, and wife.

How would you like to finish this sentence? This journey helped me realize my dreams to be . . .

What dreams do you have? What quantum leap do you envision for yourself?

My journey from having a mindset of thinking that some goals were beyond my reach to I am a woman with limitless potential was meteoric and is embedded within the pages of this book. It is my sincere wish for you that within these same pages you find that spark for yourself. Because you, too, have limitless potential.

You just have to believe, take specific action following the five steps I will share with you, and allow yourself some grace. If you can do those three things, your quantum leap is inevitable!
