      About the Author

      Hezekiah Brown

      Arbitrator-Mediator

      In 2003, Hezekiah Brown retired from his position as Deputy County Executive of Nassau County and moved to Elizabeth City, North Carolina.

      He served as a member of the Board of Visitors at Elizabeth City State University, Member of the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank County Community Relations Commission and served on the Pasquotank County Planning Board.

      He is a Veteran Arbitrator and Mediator who has developed his skills in the Corporate and Labor Relations field for more than 50 years. He is currently one of the foremost authorities in this profession. His expertise is regularly being sought by top Administrators on the State and National level as well as academia’s.

      His is the former Director of Labor-Management programs at Cornell University where he taught arbitration, mediation, collective bargaining, contract administration managing conflict, anger management, problem solving, team building, change management, diversity. In addition, he wrote the curriculum for Cornell University Extension Dispute Resolution Certificate Program which attracted students from such counties as Saudi Arabia, Cypress, Italy, Bangladesh, South America, and Australia.

      Hezekiah’s other expertise is in conflict resolution, employment discrimination and joint labor-management training. He has worked in the Industrial and Labor Relations field for over 50 years serving as a negotiator for labor and management and served for 12 years as a Federal Mediator. In addition, he served as the Chief Mediator and Chairman of the New York State Mediation Board and a member of the Mario Cuomo Cabinet.

      Hezekiah has mediated and arbitrated over 5000 Labor-Management and Community disputes in the United States including the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

      In 1992, he was selected as one of the ten instructors to visit Russia to teach Contract Administration and conflict resolution as they embarked on making the transition to the market economy.

      In 1995, he was again selected as one of ten instructors to travel to Europe to study the Global application of Cooperation between Labor and management. Upon his return from Europe, he was selected by United States Secretary of Labor, Robert Reich to serve on the Labor-Management Task Force for excellence in State and Local Government. After the work done by the Task Force, the recommendations were unanimously accepted by the United States Congress.

      He has received numerous awards and recognitions for his work as a professional and Community Leader:

      Martin Luther King Humanitarian

      Queens College Public Servant of the Year

      Hezekiah has been recognized by the Key Women of America; The Suffolk County Black Bar Association’ The University of Bridgeport; National Association of Black School Educators; The Incorporated Village of Hempstead; The Tow of Hempstead; Nassau County and the State of New York.

      In 1999, Hezekiah was elected to the Board of Trustees for the Incorporated Village of Hempstead, New York and ran for Mayor in 2001. He served on the Hempstead Board of Education.

      In May of 2008, he was inducted into the Prestigious National Academy of Arbitrators.

      Hezekiah received a Bachelor of Science Degree from State University of New York, Empire State College and was awarded an Honorary PhD. From Cornell University Extension.

      Mr. Brown continued his community service in Elizabeth City, North Carolina and was awarded the AAPR Legend of the Year Award, Links Incorporated Public Service and Professional Achievement award, Lenora Jarvis-Mackey Award for Outstanding Commitment to Excellence in the community.

      He currently serves on the Elizabeth City/Pasquotank County Community Relations Commission, Vice-President of the Local Chapter of AARP, member of the Pasquotank County Planning Board, and Chairman of the Hope Group and serves as Chairman of the 20/20 Vision Committee, Celebration Our Diversity. Hezekiah serves as a volunteer with the River City Youth Program.

      He has been married to Zelma Christine Brown for 64 years and they are the proud parents of Rodney L. Brown and Chandra D. Brown-King, and two granddaughters, Crystal Nicole Brown and Chanee (deceased).

      Hezekiah is an active member of Mt. Lebanon AME Zion Church.

      In 1957, while serving as a US Army Paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division (327 Airborne Battle Group), the Specialist Brown deployed to Little Rock, Arkansas to help enforce the desegregation of Little Rock Central High School.
