    Introduction

My journey with firearms began at a young age when I stumbled upon my grandfather's hidden arsenal of pistols and rifles inside of his closet, this alone ignited a lifelong interest. However, it was a traumatic experience involving an altercation between my mother and her boyfriend, armed with a loaded gun, that solidified my determination to protect not only myself but also the people that I care about.

This pivotal moment led me to purchase my first firearm, which was a Smith & Wesson M&P 2.0, and embark on a journey of self-education and empowerment. As my knowledge and passion grew, I started to recognize the importance of not only educating myself, but also the broader community on responsible firearm ownership, usage, and understanding the laws with it.

With this mission in mind, I took the step and created Shoot Successfully Academy, where I share valuable insights, tips, experiences, and soon training courses with others, firmly believing that a responsible gun owner is an educated one."

    10 Basic Firearm Safety Rules

    1. The muzzle of your gun should always be pointed in a safe direction.

This is the first rule of the 10 simply because you need to acquire this habit. Always remind yourself that you should never point your gun at anything you don’t intend to shoot. Let’s say there was an accidental discharge, no injury would occur if your firearm is pointed in a safe direction. Make this a habit!

    2. Your firearm should be unloaded when it’s not in use.

Honestly, your firearm should only be loaded when preparing to perform with it. Whenever I am shooting competition, there are 2 separate areas for both your gun and ammunition. Having your ammunition in the gun area is prohibited. Get use to doing this for the benefit of children and unauthorized adults. Never assume that your gun is unloaded. Always do a physical and visual check to be positive that it is unloaded. This act will show others that you are an experienced gun handler.

    3. The safety is mechanical, don’t rely on it.

This is why it’s critical to look at a gun as if it could fire at any given moment. You should always be cautioning against over-reliance when dealing with mechanical safety devices. When it comes to gun handling, it’s pretty much common sense when dealing with mechanical devices. The key point here is to always keep your finger away from that trigger when loading and unloading. It’s important that you prioritize responsibility and not solely rely on the safety features of your firearm.

    4. Always know what’s beyond your target.

Every gun that you shoot, keep in mind that the moment that round discharges you become responsible for that round. This is why it’s crucial to not only know your target but also know what’s beyond your target. If you’re not mindful of this you could injure an innocent bystander. It actually wouldn’t hurt to know the trajectory of that specific bullet as well. Take whatever steps are necessary to avoid costly mistakes from happening. You have to be a responsible gun owner that can identify those potential consequences. Prioritize safety by making informed and cautious decisions before firing.

    5. The right ammunition is key.

Obviously, every last one of us should know to use the correct ammunition for our firearms. You can come across this information by looking inside of the manual that comes with your firearm once you purchase it. This information could also be found on the ammunition box as well. We have to know that using incorrect ammunition could cause damage to our gun, maybe even personal injuries. I strongly recommend that you get in the habit of checking each cartridge as you load them. It’s possible for mistakes to happen.

Hand-loaded and reloaded ammunition could be a beneficial skill for some gun enthusiast. The problem is the ammunition that deviates from factory load pressures or hand-loading manual recommendations. This act could also cause damage to your gun and to you the shooter as well. The key point here is to examine every cartridge before loading them into your gun. Make this a habit.

    6. Did your gun fail to fire? Handle with care.

Let's say you experience a moment where you go to pull the trigger and your gun fails to fire. The most important thing here is to always keep that muzzle pointed in a safe direction, avoiding the breech, and carefully opening the action to unload the firearm. As long as there is a round in the chamber then that gun is considered loaded and ready to fire. Even if your gun fails to fire there is still potential for your gun to discharge that round. Again, always watch the muzzle and keep it pointed in a safe direction.

    Additional information:

There is potential exposure to lead and other harmful substances when discharging firearms, cleaning them, or even handling ammunition in areas that are poorly ventilated. Being in areas with proper ventilation is important. You should also thoroughly wash your hands to reduce the risk of adverse health effects.

(Can you name 3 mistakes that are being made in the above photo?)

    7. Protect your eyes, protect your ears

Every single one of you should know to protect both your eyes and ears when engaging in shooting activities. For one, repetitive exposure to the sound of a gun could cause damage to your hearing. We all need to be able to hear right? This is what makes adequate hearing protection important. Eye protection is recommended for a lot of different reasons. Just about anything you can think of your eyes need to be protected from. The use of eye protection is

also encouraged during the disassembly and cleaning of any gun to prevent springs, spring tension parts, solvents, or other components from coming into contact with the eyes. There is no reason why you should be without the proper eye and ear protection.

    8. Make sure your barrel is clear from interference.

    I highly recommend that
