Chapter 1: The Unknown
A guttural groan escaped Dr. Adrian Lambert’s lips as consciousness flickered back to life. His head throbbed with a dull ache—a relentless beat that pulsed with the nausea churning in his stomach. He blinked against the dim light filtering through grimy windows, his vision blurry and slow to focus. Panic clawed at his throat as he tried to remember, trying to piece together the fragments of his shattered memory.
The air hung heavy and stale, thick with the scent of dust and decay. A low hum, like the distant groan of a dying machine, vibrated through the room. He tried to move, but a searing pain shot through his left arm, pinning it to his side. Panic morphed into a cold dread that settled deep in his gut. Where was he? How did he get here?
He strained to take in his surroundings. The room was sparsely furnished, and his only companion was the dirty mattress he was lying on. Flakes of peeling paint dusted the cracked walls, and cobwebs draped the corners like macabre curtains. The floor, once pristine white linoleum, was now covered with dirt and debris.
A sense of dread tightened his grip. This wasn’t a hospital room anymore. It was a relic, a decaying shell of its former purpose. The sterile smell of antiseptics and medicine was absent, replaced by the musty odor of neglect and decay. A shiver ran down his spine, a primal fear of the unknown gnawing at him. He forced himself to focus, ignoring the throbbing pain in his arm. He needed to get out of there. Using his good arm, Adrian pushed himself off the mattress, his legs shaky and weak. The room tilted in front of his very eyes, and a wave of dizziness threatened to send him back down. He gritted his teeth, determined to stay upright.
He reached inside his pocket, searching for any clue to explain his predicament. He found a parking ticket in his left pocket and a bottle labeled Keep Away From Human Contact
. He was a little relieved to see his worn leather wallet appear, containing his identification and some cash; no robbery then. But the relief was extinguished as he stared at the discernable items he held in his hands. He struggled to understand what these items were and how they had gotten into his trousers in the first place.
His eyes stopped at a small key lying on the counter next to the mattress. It was a single key, a standard size, with a worn surface, but the engraving on its head sent a tremor through him. Two sets of numbers were etched into the metal: 3134 237. What did they signify?
The key felt strangely heavy in Adrian’s palm, its smooth surface a juxtaposition to the rough texture of his clammy skin. The engraved number 3134 237 seemed to burn into his vision. Were they a room number, perhaps of his supposed destination? Or a code to unlock an escape route? He had no point of reference, no context to decipher their meaning.
He tried to head toward the doorway, his heart hammering a frantic rhythm against his ribs. The sound of his ragged breaths filled the silence, the only contrast to the ominous hum that seemed to originate from the building itself. As he reached the doorway, a ray of light cut through the gloom, offering a little hope in the otherwise bleak surroundings. He hesitated momentarily, but the thought of remaining trapped here was unbearable. With a deep breath, he pushed through.
The hallway stretched before him, an endless tunnel of shedding wallpaper and flickering shadows. The air grew colder, and each step vibrated off the bare walls, increasing the silence and magnifying the fear that coiled in his stomach. This wasn’t just an abandoned hospital; it was a forgotten tomb, and he was an unwelcome guest.
With a nudging kick in his steps, he searched for a pathway out of the medical facility. The sooner he figured a way out, the sooner he’d be able to decipher how he got there in the first place.
The mere fact that none of his belongings were taken suggested a purpose beyond simple robbery. Perhaps his captors had a specific reason for bringing him here. Or had he gotten there all on his own? He flexed his injured arm, a dull ache throbbing with each movement.
Adrian scanned the hallway like a trapped animal. Wherever he looked, he could only see dust and debris. His eyes darted from the grimy walls to the metal bed frames scattered around, searching for any anomaly, any semblance of a lock. He ran his hand along the baseboards, feeling for a hidden latch, a concealed mechanism. He even crouched down, scrutinizing the air vent for a potential keyhole, a ridiculous notion that flickered in his desperate mind. But there
