Raymond J. Klein began his career in high school. His interest in photography bloomed after finding his dad's Kodak folding camera. At 14 years of age, one of his photographs was published in the local newspaper, as a subject of interest to the readers of that publication, and earned $10.00. He continued his education in a 4-year service career in the USAF in a photography unit. Another photograph, during his service career, earned $175.00. A series of photographs, after his service duty, produced for one of the nation's aircraft manufacturers, propelled him into an almost forty-year national advertising photography career. He earned a Master of Photography Degree by 1976, with the Professional Photographers of America Inc. During this period, the “Billing Day Rate” ballooned to $1500.00. This book is involved with earnings capable in that industry. This activity continued until he retired. Continuing his photographic interest by joining a camera club, and art gallery, where he still enjoys sales of his artful, and dramatic photographs, and recently winning an important international contest in a magazine read around the world. The book discusses techniques and the trials and tribulations facing a commercial advertising photographer. He urges novice photographers to follow through with their own imaginative endeavors.

Born in 1932, he served in the USAF 4 years, (1952 - 56) as a photographer, honorably discharged. Employed by RCA at Cape Canaveral, (1956 - 57), motion-picture photography of rocket launches. Then employed by "Martin Orlando Aircraft," ( 1957-58), where I produced a series of still photographs, which propelled me into the advertising field. I am a retired Professional Advertising Photographer, with an earned (1976) Master of Photography Degree from the "Professional Photographers of America, Inc."

    Let this be a suggestion as what to do with those imaginative creations. Exhibit them, display them, and publish them where everyone can see them. Today we certainly have substantial venues to do just that. Search them out!

    I believe, when Thomas Jefferson wrote those words in 1776, what he really meant was that all men are born with equal opportunity. Actually, opportunity does not happen to us all in an equal manner. If we prepare ourselves in a field of our own interest, we will be able to grasp success when opportunity arises. That opportunity may be quite elusive, and we must work to have the ability to recognize it when it does arise. We also have the ability to produce opportunity for ourselves using our imagination.

    Imagination

    PHOTOGRAPHERS STATEMENT:

    I had a very successful career producing illustrative photographs of all types for advertising, editorial, catalogs, contests, and decorative art for the walls in an individual’s home. I hope to inspire you to do the same. Young people ask me, "How do you get into this line of work?" This book is going to attempt to answer that question by example! A business background, legal experience, and most of all, study of the arts and a deep enthusiasm for photography would be extremely helpful.

    Preface

    Experimentation with photography is an essential part of making opportunities happen for yourself, creating a portfolio to demonstrate to buyers and users of photography all your capabilities. During my lifetime career, five photographs presented giant steps to promote my career to heights never imagined.

    Martin Engineer

    The first image was produced to excite engineers to come to work for a company producing aircraft for the protection of the United States of America, and it continues to accomplish that effort to this day. The company is also deeply involved in space exploration.

    Bath Rug Advertisement

    The second photograph was produced to promote sales of a product to be used in every home. It was sold at stores by one of the largest retail merchandisers of that time.

    Vinyl Flooring Advertisement

    The third photograph was made for the same retail merchandiser, and in the process, it gave me nearly enough merits to earn a master of photography degree with the Professional Photographers of America Inc. association awarded in 1976.

    Phone Answering Machine

    The fourth image was an ultimate experimental product photograph that won the heart of a new client and pushed our photo sales through the roof.

    Prize Winning Image

    The fifth image is a winner of an important international contest, which received photographs from cities in countries all over the world.

    There are other photographs in this book that also were successful enough to continue promoting a very satisfying living and career honors. For a young person interested in photography, I recommend that you tailor your career toward the advertising field. This area is the highest-paying one available to you.

    The five photographs mentioned above will be found in the sequence in which my career continued to progress through my life. I hope you may see how, using your imagination, you can produce valuable photographs of your own. Keep a positive attitude.

    The two most important tools a photographer can possess are imagination and an understanding of lighting.

    Chapter One

    The Art of Imagination

    In the 1940s, magazines like Life, Look , and National Geographic were big national magazines! Pictures depicting the events taking place in the world at that time were published weekly or monthly, and the stories were huge news. Photographers accomplishing these images received credit lines, and they became household names. Being a photographer was truly a significant accomplishment! The value of their images was monumental and inspired a nation of students.

    I was an only child, but my mother and father both came from large families. My mother had four sisters and five brothers. Dad had a brother and a sister. Both parents were born in the USA, but their parents, my grandparents, were of European descent. Dad had been taken back to Europe as
