The Night of the Flying Pumpkins
It was the spookiest night of the year – Halloween! All over town, children were dressed as witches, ghosts, and monsters, knocking on doors, shouting Trick or Treat!
and collecting bags full of candy. But in the sleepy village of Grimbleton, something far stranger was happening. Something no one could explain...
Sammy Slippers was not like other kids. For one thing, he loved Halloween, but he hated candy. He much preferred weird things like pickles or Brussels sprouts. And while everyone else wore costumes, Sammy liked dressing as himself. He had his reasons.
I just don’t see the point in pretending to be something I’m not,
Sammy would say.
This year, however, was different. Sammy’s best friend, Molly Moonface, had dared him to wear a costume. She was a witch, naturally, with a long crooked hat and a broomstick that didn’t fly but made an excellent scooter. Sammy, not wanting to back down from a dare, had reluctantly agreed to dress up. But his costume was... odd.
You’re supposed to be a... pumpkin?
Molly asked, squinting at the giant, lumpy orange suit he was wearing.
Obviously,
Sammy said proudly. But not just any pumpkin. I’m a flying pumpkin.
Molly giggled. Flying pumpkins don’t exist!
Well, maybe they should!
Sammy puffed out his chest. Imagine how much faster I’d get from house to house collecting—uh, I mean, giving out Brussels sprouts.
As they wandered the streets, collecting candy (well, Molly did, Sammy just traded his for pickles), they noticed something strange. The pumpkins on the porches of every house started glowing. But not just glowing—buzzing, shaking, and
