About this ebook

Just weeks before Halloween 2022, the young writers of Almaty, Kazakhstan, gathered at StudyRoom Language Center to compete in a very special writing competition. They created all-original stories based on picture prompts, and they had only one hour to make the most memorable creation possible.

These are those stories.

In this book, you'll see the wild creativity of writers as young as 10. English is not their first language, and yet they've crafted something truly memorable.

    THE LANGUAGE CENTER

StudyRoom is a language center that uses the most powerful tool to change the world: education. We believe that learning is a right, not a privilege and it opens doors along the way. Knowing a language transforms lives and societies. It means freedom in choosing life partners, building careers, increasing salaries, finding new friends and feeling like you belong.

Founded in 2013, StudyRoom builds a happy environment helping teachers to teach at their best.  We connect a deep understanding of education with the power of technology to continuously push the boundaries of learning.

Today, StudyRoom empowers 1500 learners with the world's best language-teaching system, but we have plans to become an international company with more than 5 million students all over the globe. We are proud to partner with the global education community and witness your endless passion to ensure learners around the world have access to a quality education.

Here we present the best stories from our 2022 story competition, where young learners can compete with each other in creating stories in English. We believe that the strongest motivation to learn a new language is to use it in real life, be it a conference, debate, movie club or a story competition like this one.  We help educators shape each learner’s journey to prepare them for the future.

We change lives. We change society around us. We change the world.

    Roller Skates

There is nothing in the world that I hate as much as roller-skating. That’s why I couldn’t really explain why I was at the dock at ten in the morning on a Saturday, trying to shove a pair of silly-looking boots with wheels onto my feet.

I mean, there was one explanation, and he was standing right next to me, roller-skates on, standing with the other guys from our grade.

    You fine there, Laura?

Absolutely! I responded to my crush Jake, while my fingers were getting lost in the shoelaces. It was the first time he talked to me this year. I almost dropped the roller skate, but he was already looking away.

In around five minutes, when I was already desperate enough to throw these stupid shoes into the lake, Tina (my best friend for eleven years) finally arrived at the park entrance. She rushed right to me, hugged me quickly and bent to help me finally lace up my skates.

Thank God, I said with a sigh. I thought you just left me here alone. I took her hand to be able to stand up. She giggled.
