Understanding and Recognizing Your Emotions
We live in a world driven by data, logic, and information, but what often gets overlooked is the role our emotions play in shaping our everyday decisions and interactions in our life. Let’s take the example of Sarah, a mid-level manager who finds herself snapping at her team during a high-pressure project. While her initial thought is that the stress of the looming deadline is making her irritable, upon reflection, Sarah realizes that the real issue is her fear of being perceived as incompetent. She wants to prove herself but hasn’t communicated her concerns effectively. By understanding her own emotional drivers, Sarah can address her stress more productively and support her team without conflict.

What is Emotional Intelligence?
Emotional intelligence refers to your ability to perceive, control, and evaluate emotions—both in yourself and others. The concept gained mainstream recognition through psychologist Daniel Goleman’s work, who identified EQ as equally, if not more, important than IQ when it comes to life success. Emotional intelligence touches every aspect of our lives—from how we communicate and handle stress to how we motivate ourselves and build relationships.
Think about the difference between two leaders: One reacts impulsively to challenges, driven by frustration, while the other stays calm, weighs the options, and responds thoughtfully. The second leader has high emotional intelligence and uses it to create an environment of trust and respect.
The Power of Self-Awareness
Self-awareness is the foundation of emotional intelligence. It involves recognizing your emotions, understanding where they come from, and acknowledging how they impact your thoughts and actions. This level of self-awareness helps you make intentional choices rather than reacting impulsively.
