    Chapter 1: The Last Breath

The phone rang in the dead of night, cutting through the silence like a knife. Sarah jolted awake, her heart already pounding before she even opened her eyes. Who could be calling at this hour? The clock on the nightstand blinked a glaring 3:07 AM in bold red digits. Her hand fumbled for the phone, half-asleep and filled with dread.

Hello? she answered, her voice raspy, more out of instinct than intent.

The voice on the other end was shaky, almost as if they were trying to hold back tears. Sarah... it’s your sister. She’s... she’s gone.

THE DRIVE BACK TO HER hometown felt surreal, the roads a blur of rain-soaked asphalt and dim headlights. Sarah hadn’t been back to the house in years—since their mother’s death. The house had always seemed too full of shadows, too haunted by memories Sarah wasn’t ready to face. But now, she had no choice.

As she pulled into the driveway, a chill settled over her. The house loomed ahead, dark and foreboding, the windows like hollow eyes staring into the night. The rain had slowed to a drizzle, but the air still felt thick, oppressive.

She stepped out of the car and stood there, staring at the
