    Chapter 1: The Inheritance

The phone call came on an ordinary Tuesday morning, the kind of day that blended into countless others. Emily Greer had just settled into her favorite spot at the small café down the street, her laptop humming softly in front of her and a steaming cup of chai latte to her right. She was scrolling through job postings—a task that had become as routine as brushing her teeth—when her phone buzzed on the table. The number was unfamiliar, but something compelled her to pick up.

Miss Emily Greer? The voice was formal, clipped, and carried the weight of authority.

Yes, this is she, Emily replied, her brow furrowing. Her first thought was that it might be another scam call, but the tone of the voice gave her pause.

This is Benjamin Carter, attorney for the estate of Rose Greer. I’m sorry to inform you that your grandmother passed away three days ago.

Emily’s grip on the phone tightened. I... What? she stammered, the words not quite registering.

I understand this may come as a shock, the attorney continued, his voice softening slightly. But I’m reaching out because you are the sole beneficiary of her estate.

Emily’s mind raced. Rose Greer, her enigmatic grandmother, was a woman she’d barely known. She’d only met her a handful of times, and each encounter had been marked by an air of mystery. Rose had lived alone in a remote coastal town, rarely visited by family, and even more rarely talked about her past. And now she was gone? And had left something behind for Emily?

I... I didn’t even know she was ill, Emily finally managed to say.

She passed peacefully in her sleep, Benjamin said, his words rehearsed but sincere. I’d like to meet with you to discuss the details of her will. Would tomorrow morning work for you?

Emily hesitated, her thoughts swirling. Yes, she said finally. Tomorrow morning is fine.

The next day, Emily found herself sitting in a leather chair in Benjamin Carter’s office, the walls lined with shelves of dusty legal tomes. She felt out of place, her jeans and oversized sweater a stark contrast to the polished mahogany and brass surroundings. Benjamin, a man in his late fifties with silver-rimmed glasses and a meticulously trimmed beard, sat across from her with a manila folder in hand.

Thank you for coming, Miss Greer, he began. As I mentioned on the phone, you are the sole beneficiary of your grandmother’s estate.

Emily nodded, still trying to process the reality of Rose’s death.

Benjamin opened the folder and slid a document across the desk toward her. Your grandmother left very specific instructions. She has bequeathed her house in Harbor’s Edge to you, along with all of its contents.

The house? Emily asked, startled. You mean the old Victorian on the cliffs?

Yes, Benjamin confirmed. It’s a remarkable property. Large, historic, and situated on prime coastal land.

Emily’s mind flashed back to the one and only time she’d seen the house. She had been seven years old, holding her mother’s hand as they stood on the gravel driveway. The house had loomed above them, a towering structure of weathered wood and intricate carvings. She remembered thinking it looked like something out of a storybook—beautiful, but a little bit frightening.

Why would she leave it to me? Emily asked, more to herself than to Benjamin.

She didn’t provide an explanation, Benjamin said, adjusting his glasses. But she did leave you this. He reached into the folder and pulled out a sealed envelope with Emily’s name written in elegant cursive. She instructed me to give this to you personally.

Emily took the envelope, her fingers trembling slightly. She stared at it for a moment, the weight of it heavy in her hands. Her name was written in Rose’s hand, the looping letters familiar yet distant, like a relic from another life.

Do you have any questions? Benjamin asked.

Emily shook her head. Not right now, she said, tucking the envelope into her bag. I think I need some time to process all of this.

The drive to Harbor’s Edge felt surreal. Emily hadn’t been back to the coastal town since she was a child, and the memories were hazy at best. The road wound through dense forests that eventually gave way to sweeping views of the ocean. By the time she reached the outskirts of the town, the sun was setting, casting the sky in shades of pink and gold.

When she finally pulled into the driveway of the old Victorian house, she felt a shiver run down her spine. The house was exactly as she remembered it: tall and imposing, with gabled roofs and a wraparound porch. The paint was peeling in places, and the windows seemed to stare at her like eyes, but there was an undeniable charm to it.

Emily stepped out of her car and approached the front door, her footsteps crunching on the gravel. She unlocked the door with the key Benjamin had given her and pushed it open. The air inside was cool and faintly musty, carrying the scent of aged wood and sea salt.

The entryway was grand, with a sweeping staircase and intricate woodwork that hinted at the house’s former glory. Dust motes danced in the fading light streaming through the windows. Emily set her bag down and took a tentative step inside, her shoes echoing on the hardwood floor.

She didn’t know what she had expected to feel, but
