Alex, wait up!
Maya called, her voice echoing through the dense trees. Alex, as usual, was already halfway up the overgrown path, his bright red backpack bouncing against his back. He paused, but only for a moment, a grin spreading across his face.
Come on, slowpokes!
he shouted back, before continuing his rapid ascent.
Ben and Chloe trailed behind Maya, Ben carefully examining a bug he’d found, while Chloe scrolled through something on her phone, occasionally bumping into tree trunks.
Alex, honestly,
Maya huffed when she finally caught up, you're going to trip and break something one of these days.
Nah, I'm too fast,
Alex boasted, puffing out his chest. He then tripped over a root, nearly falling. Okay, maybe sometimes,
he admitted sheepishly, brushing off his jeans.
You should try saying 'please' when you ask us to wait,
Chloe suggested, not looking up from her phone.
And 'thank you' when someone does something for you,
Ben added, his eyes still glued to the beetle crawling on his hand.
Alex rolled his eyes. Yeah, yeah, I know. You guys are always on my case about that stuff.
They continued deeper into the woods, the sunlight filtering through the leaves, creating dappled patterns on the forest floor. The air was thick with the smell of damp earth and pine needles. This part of the woods was their secret spot, a place where they could escape the noise of their neighborhood and just be
