I live in Kansas City but have lived overseas, in Kenya and Morocco. These travels have influenced my writing (Hey I now have a book out on my time in Kenya called "The Trees Were Spinning"). P.S. I really am working on the next books! The Trees Were Spinning is out now, and DRWN Trilogy book 1 will be coming next year. Writing is real work! Almost done with book 1, and then the editing begins...

Late Leaves Hanging - Erik Black

IMG_4752.JPGLate Leaves Hanging
It has been nearly a decade since I published my last poetry collection (not counting a book of haiku and another of special untranslatable words). A lot has happened since, both good and bad, and much of this has influenced my writing. Two wonderful cats joined our family in 2017. Later that same year I lost my brother to suicide and also my uncle. Gain and loss are both part of life, and we each find a way to express our joy and pain. I have had many struggles with my own identity and worth, attacks coming through my children that divided us for a time, doubts that linger still. I have enjoyed a few world travels, new cultures and experiences to add to my pool of dreams. My father moved back to live nearby, and my mother I had to move to a memory care unit near me, still so good to have them in my life. Recently my body has not been kind to me, an autoimmune disease that limits what I can do but has shown me that I still have many blessings and opportunities. And ever by my side my wonderful faithful bride, and ever in my heart faith that leads my life, and all around the wonder of creation and Him who made it all.

Crown Shyness
there are cracks in the canopy
fissures pouring the sky behind
light touching the shaded earth below
the sitkas do not touch
know not the embrace of love
there is always sadness in your leaving
my little love
an hour or a year, time matters not
but that we are not together
i send you out into the world —
my heart goes with you

the darkness God and i alone
see clearly, His brightness
unfaded, untainted
but my soul carries it, buries it,
gnaws upon it as a wound
that does not heal

Midnight, 2 hours into a blackout
willow throws her hair
north and south
the wind her fierce partner
no light but lightning
filling half the sky;
darkness and silence
brought our children
to music, to us

never heard before nor exactly again
only a moment
