The fishing village at Thong Kut is the reason why so many people make the trek down to the southern coast of Koh Samui. Enjoy the incredible scenery and the freshest fish, and you can even try your hand at catching one yourself! The islands of Koh Mudsum and Koh Tan are just a short ride away on an unusual long-tail boat and definitely worth a day trip.
A great way to start a day in Thong Kut is get out and about and explore the area. If you make it down to the bay early enough, you might see the boats as they make their way out to the fishing grounds. The colourful long boats known as Kor Lae, are built in the traditional Southeast Asian style with bow and stern higher than the hull. Try a day of fishing by joining a fishing charter. There are plenty of operators around the bay so you should be able to find one to suit your price and group size.
Thong Kut’s beach isn’t the best for swimming due to its murkiness and the number of boats in the area. It’s also not set up for watersports, so if you’re keen for either, head to the north and east coasts of Koh Samui.
Another option is taking a boat to Koh Mudsum or Koh Tan. They both have long beaches perfect for swimming and relaxing in the sun and there is plenty of fishing around them too. Snorkeling and diving trips are also available around the islands.
Back on the main island, you’ll find some of the best seafood restaurants in Koh Samui. Enjoy the afternoon with a cocktail on the beach and the sun setting across the ocean. Unfortunately there aren’t many options for accommodation in the village so you will likely need to visit on a day-to-day basis.
