Location is beautiful and is Well located for lots of interesting visits in the surrounding area. Staff were surprisingly not very helpful or service oriented. The first evening we asked the hotel to book us a table at a nearby restaurant as we were arriving which they could/would not do. The hotel could become a little pearl with a bit more care, attention to details and better service. In our family room, the bed was quite small and the room had no real curtains to protect from the light danish summer mornings.
This is a lovely manor house type hotel with quiet, attractive rooms. Even though we were on the ground floor in one of the smaller (cheaper) rooms it didn't feel as if we were in the cheap seats. The only downside of the room is that there were no tea or coffee facilities in the room which would have been welcome and the shower obviously had problems draining away. The surrounding countryside is very pretty and green. The hotel has a restaurant on site but it was quite expensive and may well have been worth it but there is no choice - you basically eat what the chef decides to cook and we didn't fancy veal as the main course. So we went to Ry (a village nearby on one of the lakes) for an Italian which was very reasonable for Denmark.
Stayed here for a few days. The hotel was a bit further out of town than we expected. The hotel was a lovely old place which of course meant not so many mod cons like lifts. Room was very comfortable, wifi good. Lovely grounds and friendly staff. Had a set dinner at restaurant which was ok.
The service is terrible - people in the front desk act that they are doing you a favor! Very rude. Housekeeping here means that they just make your bed for you and leave fresh towels - they do not clean the bathroom etc. My colleague didn’t even have his room cleaned the entire 4 night stay! When we told them that during checkout - their excuse was that he didn’t have the “please clean room” sign on the door. There are no toiletries provided as advertised!! So please bring your own bath gel, shampoo, lotion etc if you plan to stay here. There is no phone in the room to even call the front desk if you need something or if there is an emergency in the middle of the night. There is nothing around in the area, so if you are looking for something to do, stay in Aarhus. Very, very disappointed with establishment.
Amazing hotel and great breakfast options. Stayed for a birthday and the staff were happy to provide an extra "sweetener" to our trip - so we got our breakfast for free! Superb service, would love to stay again in summertime and have a meal at the restaurant too.
The only problem was that they have not revived my booking.
But they went more then the extra mile to help me. And found room for me.
The service was fantastic.
We loved this place! Even if you're traveling for business, if you've got a car and gps you're only 15 min out of Aarhus. If you're sightseeing, man, it's like living one of the castles you're paying to walk through.
Four star food. Incredible.

Hotel best for parties
Nice people and good food, hated that the Christmas decorations where not real.
This is a great hotel if one wants to get away from the humdrum of the city life. The staff is excellent and the hotel is well kept. The countryside is beautiful and although we were there in winters we were not disappointed. Overall we were very happy.
We loved this place!
The staff were friendly and welcoming. They seemed to be truly happy we were there. The room had lots of space with a cool nook at the top of a small staircase where children could sleep and play.
We had eaten before arriving, which saddened us when we walked through the main doors...the food smelled fantastic! We were given the choice of two lounges in which to enjoy some evening wine...both lovely. As we were there in the off season, we ended up with a lounge to ourselves...extravagantly homey. We had breakfast in the morning...excellent choices in an elegant dining space overlooking a peaceful garden. Of note, there was an outdoor area to eat during warmer times.
I would stay again in a heartbeat!
This hotel was sensational. Don't get me wrong, there are some minor things that aren't amazing like its an older hotel rehab so hair dryers barely work and are from the 80's and things like that but nothing can beat it's beauty, the restaurants amazing food, or the congeniality of its staff. It was a prefect first stop for our trip to Denmark
If you are driving through Denmark as we were, Sophiendal castle is the perfect way to spend a night. Arrive before dinner and get a fanastic meal (with some of the best wine I've had) before going to sleep in the spectacular rooms.
