The 11 cases comprised 6 African grey parrots (Psittacus erithacus erithacus), 1 peach-faced lovebird (
Agapornis roseicollis), 1 galah (Eolophus roseicapilla), 1 Goffin's cockatoo (Tanimbar corella) (Cacatua goffiniana), 1 Moluccan cockatoo (Cacatua moluccensis), and 1 Senegal parrot (Poicephalus senegalus).
(3,5,6) The organism has been identified in several captive bird species, but it appears to be most commonly diagnosed in budgerigars, parrotlets (Forpis coelestis), lovebirds (
Agapornis species), canaries (Serinus canarius), and finch species.
The sperm concentration that we measured for kea is higher than the values previously reported in monk parakeets (Myiopsitta monachus), (19) Hispaniolan Amazon parrots, (15) blue-fronted Amazon parrots (Amazona aestiva), (20) and golden-capped conures (Aratinga auricapillus) (21) but much lower than the reported values for cockatiels, (22) budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus), (23) and peach-faced lovebirds (
Agapornis roseicollis).
(11) It has been used successfully to treat hydropericardium in a Fischer's lovebird (
Agapornis fischeri) and right heart failure in a blue-fronted Amazon parrot (Amazona aestiva) and an African grey parrot (Psittacus erithacus).
(7) Cockatiels (Nymphicus liol landi cus) tend to be overrepresented in these cases but hemangiosarcomas restricted to the skin have been reported in a variety of psittacine species including budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus), lovebirds (
Agapornis species), African grey parrots (Psittacus erithacus), and pionus parrots (Pionus species).
A 17-year-old female peach-faced lovebird (
Agapornis roseicollis) developed a spherical mass on the distal right dorsal wing at a site that was previously fractured and surgically repaired with an indwelling intramedullary pin.
Cutaneous mast cell tumor and mastocytosis in a black-masked lovebird (
Agapornis personata).
(7) Pericardiocentesis has been reported as a diagnostic and treatment option for pericardial effusion in a Fischer's lovebird (
Agapornis fischeri) and an orange-winged Amazon parrot (Amazona amazonica).
In a separate report, S aureus was identified in a Nyasa lovebird (
Agapornis lilianae) that had been diagnosed with an exudative to ulcerative dermatitis.
Investigation on the microflora in the gastrointestinal contents and excrement of clinically healthy lovebirds (
Agapornis spp.).
In 2 lovebird (
Agapornis species) cases, direct sequencing of proventricular samples confirmed the presence of Cryptosporidium avian genotype III.
(5) In 4 lovebirds (
Agapornis species), C albicans was cultured from yellow necrotic foci in the lungs, with epithelial metaplasia indicative of hypovitaminosis A in more than half of the cases.
