The lesser yellow-headed vulture Cathartes burrovianus is one of several sympatrically occurring vulture species in the New World tropics (Wetmore 1950, 1964).
Animals with the most restricted occurrences were vultures (Cathartes aura and Coragyps atratus); red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis); and a lizard of the family Phrynosomatidae (species unidentifiable), each observed at one site.

Vulture (Cathartes spp.), coyote (Canis latrans), raccoon (Procyon lotor), gray fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus), and Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) were among the scavengers recorded.
Such situations are still common in certain parts of Brazil, where young calves can be attacked by pumas (Puma concolor), jaguars (Panthera onca) and vultures (Cathartes spp).

Other species detected using these methods included raccoons, opossums, domestic dogs, squirrels, eastern cottontails, striped skunks, turkey vultures (Cathartes aura), black vultures (Coragyps atratus), a woodchuck, a domestic cat, a wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo), and a nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus).
