In subtropical regions, the Engraulidae and Clupeidae families are very common in coastal lagoons (Barletta et al., 2010), such as Peri Lagoon in Brazil.
To increase the number of observations available for analysis, up to 50 randomly chosen specimens in the 5 families targeted for analysis (Engraulidae, Clupeidae, Scombridae, Sciaenidae, and Lutjanidae) and unidentified and Percoidei larvae were measured at the NMFS laboratory in Pascagoula, Mississippi.
In Brazil, studies focused on the description of the sagitta otolith being: Sciaenidae (CORREA; VIANA, 1992), Carangidae (ABILHOA; CORREA, 1992), Gerreidae (LEMOS et al., 1992), Engraulidae and Clupeidae (LEMOS et al., 1995).
