IVUS employs a tiny ultrasound transducer on the tip of a probe that bounces sound waves off the inside walls of the coronary arteries.
In this case, the NSE Alpha diameter was determined based on the
IVUS assessment, and we chose an NSE Alpha 2.5 mm, which is larger than the true lumen diameter but smaller than the vessel wall diameter.
Commercially available
IVUS systems (2.7 F and 40-MHz
IVUS catheter [Boston Scientific Corp., CA, USA] and iLab [Boston Scientific Corp., USA]) and an
IVUS detection meter were used along with Sonos Intravascular off-line image analysis software (Hewlett-Packard Development Company, USA).
The plaque boundary detection in
IVUS image is very difficult because a region of the
IVUS image backward the guide wire often becomes shadowed, and then it contains no texture information in the shadow region as shown in Fig 2.
