Katharevusa

His language is a strange mixture of the refined and stilted Greek called Katharevusa, inherited from the Byzantines, and the Demotic, or spoken, tongue.

The situation is not unlike that of Greek with its standard, katharevusa, and its vernacular, dhimotiki.

The movement revolted against Katharevusa, the stilted and archaic official language of Greece, and against the emotionalism of the Romantics.
