The following criteria were used to select the participants with
LD. First, participants were identified as having LD by the Identification, Placement, Review Committee of the school board.
For example, individuals with LD also may manifest social-emotional, behavioral, or attentional difficulties, which may be either concomitant or secondary to
LD. Although individuals with LD may share some characteristics with individuals who have other disabilities, the defining characteristic of LD is that the cognitive processes affecting learning are the primary determinants of the educational difficulties that the individual with LD experiences.
In this study, clinically defined late-stage LD patients included those with later manifestations (neurologic involvement, cardiac involvement, and arthritis) and patients with chronic
LD. The diagnosis groups of suspected LD, tick bite, and other related complaints involved all patients without a clear final diagnosis of
LD.It was also interesting to note from the study that the proportions of students who continued to display the same deficits after the indicated time interval were approximately the same across three operational definitions of
LD. Likewise, Ostad (1997, 1999) disclosed that about 22 percent of MD students in his study had improved their mathematics performance over a two-year period, no longer satisfying the operational definition of MD (i.e., score below the 14th percentile).
This may be the result of platelet destruction with subsequent release of intracellular
LD. Lithium-heparin samples showed the same LD activity as lithium-heparin-gel samples despite higher platelet contamination.
The author interviewed 13 individuals from diverse backgrounds utilizing a semi-structured interview with open-ended questions to learn about their experiences as persons with
LD. The interviews were transcribed and then sorted into topical areas that focused upon particular life issues.
There isn't any reason to be ashamed of
LD. Evidence from a Yale University study of brain scans shows that some people's brains simply are wired to process information differently.
This, too, can impair brain functions and lead to
LD.The book traces the history of the LD field from its early focus on reading disabilities and dyslexia, to the current thinking on
LD. Coles debunks the explanations of neurological dysfunction, first proposed by Hinshelwood in the early 1900s, as well as the brain hemisphere dominance theory of Samuel Orton.
Of these 10 clusters overall, seven were associated with hotels, and three were associated with cruise ships; each cluster consisted of either two or three cases of
LD. The majority of persons with travel-associated LD had traveled to destinations outside their state of residence.
Six major themes emerged: (a) LD identity presentation; (b) disclosure of academic difficulties; (c-d) disclosure of emotional problems and social distress; (e) requests for help; and (f) description of positive aspects of
LD. Results demonstrated the potential the study of online messaging has for understanding the LD experience.
There are a variety of teaching strategies and modifications that are recommended for all children, but are absolutely critical for those students with
LD. Without these types of modifications, the non-disabled children will probably still learn even though it would not be as easy.
At the end of the second session, participants will be able to do the following: [1] identify the legal rights of workers with LD; [2] suggest possible workplace accommodations for employees with LD; [3] discuss issues for workers with LD on getting and keeping a job; [4] identify disability-friendly strategies for the workplace; [5] recognize psychosocial issues for employees with LD; [6] present a professional development sequence and lesson plans appropriate for workplace literacy programs; and [7] identify 3 model workplace programs that address issues related to
LD.) Includes 14 references and a list of online resources.
Additionally, the Pygmalion Effect [also known as the self-fulfilling prophecy], or the idea that one's expectations about a person can eventually lead that person to behave and achieve in ways that conform to those expectations (Brehm & Kassin, 1996), is a powerful phenomenon and may be influencing the output they receive from their students, rather than the work (perceived to be below standard) being the sole result of
LD.A total of 2,399 cases reported to the DHMH with a known date of onset from 1993 through 1998 met the national surveillance case definition for
LD. This report includes the 2,371 (99%) patients for whom mailing addresses were available.
