After nearly a year, Cervantes, bored with the routine and with Acquaviva, joined the papal forces going to fight in

The historical connections with James, however, grow rather more interesting at this point, for James had authored `Lepanto', a narrative poem with a very Venetian and military interest, describing the decisive battle of
Lepanto (Sunday 7 October 1571) in which the Turks were routed by Don John of Austria, son of Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor.
All three commemorate the Battle of
Lepanto of 1571, when a Christian fleet led by the papacy, Venice and Habsburg forces sailing under the flag of the Holy Roman Empire virtually destroyed the ships of the Ottoman empire in a celebrated engagement which took place off the western coast off modern-day Greece.
He took part in the decisive sea battle against the Turks at
Lepanto (1571), during which he received a wound that permanently crippled his left hand.
Pope Pius V (1504-1572) organized an alliance against the Turks, and 208 Catholic galleys (oared ships) clashed with 273 Ottoman galleys in a three-hour fight at
Lepanto. The Catholics won a complete victory.

In 1569 he went to Italy, became a soldier, and fought in the battle of
Lepanto (1571), in which he acquitted himself with distinction and lost the use of his left hand; he was extremely proud of his role in the famous victory and of the nickname he had earned, el manco de
Lepanto.

Lepanto that now hangs in the chamber of deputies or lower house in Madrid.
