Their many writings on the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB) raise the bar of scholarly rigour and insist on addressing
Stalinism and its ramifications through intensive use of the voluminous archives of the Comintern.
For one, the journal Novy Mir, where Tvardovsky was chief editor, published Lifshitz's February 1954 article against literary
Stalinism, "The Diary of Marietta Shaginian." (8) Moreover, at the request of Tvardovsky, Lifshitz wrote two internal reviews in support of the publication of Alexander Solzhenitsyn's One Day in the Life of Ivan Devisovich and In the First, Circle.
Alongside these, Dina Khapaeva and Alexander Etkind worked in a sustained fashion on a parallel, culture-centered critique of post-Soviet memory of
Stalinism (for the latter, this culminated in the publication of his magisterial Warped Mourning in 2013, the only monograph devoted entirely to this problem).
McNulty persuasively argues that there was a common core of radicalism growing out of the nineteenth century, which spanned the Independent Labour Party (ILP), through the Fabians to the Liberal Party--and that some members of the CPGB (notably Ivor Montagu) shared these values before
Stalinism eclipsed this more pluralistic domestic political culture in the mid-1950s.

Yet there have been no legal processes put into place by which the atrocities of
Stalinism would be officially recognised and condemned as crimes against humanity.
