Recalling his almost suicidal bout with depression,
Styron wrote: 'My brain had begun to endure its familiar siege: panic and dislocation, and a sense that my thought processes were being engulfed by a toxic and unnameable tide that obliterated any enjoyable response to the living word.' A sense of dislocation can manifest itself not only in the psychic realm, but in every aspect of human existence: social, cultural, religious, political, and even in the economic sphere.
