Initial treatment consisted of a long-acting doxycycline hyclate injection (50 mg/kg IM q7d; Vibramycin, Pfizer PFE Switzerland GmbH, Zurich, Switzerland) and meloxicam (1 mg/kg PO q24h).

The most common are azithromycin (Zithromax), which is taken in a single dose by mouth, or doxycycline (Vibramycin, Doryx, and generic brands), taken twice a day for a week.

The genetic drug is AB rated and bioequivalent to Pfizer Inc.'s Vibramycin.

The patient was treated with vibramycin, and his symptoms improved.

Review of previous medical records showed numerous courses of antibiotics had been prescribed, including injectable doxycycline (100 mg/kg IM q7d; Vibramycin SF 100 mg/5 mL, Pfizer Limited, Capelle aan den Ijssel, Netherlands) as well as a compounded formulation of ketoconazole.

Injectable doxycycline: The only suitable doxycycline formulation for intramuscular (IM) injection is Vibramycin SF IVa (Vibravenos, Pfizer, Rotterdam, The Netherlands), a specific European formulation that can be imported in small quantities into the United States (Table 4).

Treatment at the previous referral center was initiated with doxycycline (25 mg/kg PO q24h; Vibramycin calcium, Pfizer Labs, New York, NY, USA) for 4 weeks.

Based on the culture and sensitivity results, a single injection of long-acting doxycycline (40 mg/ kg IM; Vibramycin SF IV, Pfizer Laboratories, London, England) was administered for treatment.

Initial treatments were crystalloid fluids (lactated Ringer's solution, 50 mL/kg SC q24h for 9 days total), vitamin B complex (2 mg/kg thiamine SC once), doxycycline (25 mg/kg PO q12h for 24 days; Vibramycin, Pfizer Inc, New York, NY, USA), and meloxicam (1 mg/kg PO q24h for 9 days; Metacam, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals Inc, Ridgefield, CT, USA).

The bird recovered uneventfully from anesthesia, was treated with long-acting doxycycline (50 mg/kg IM; Vibramycin, Pfizer, Capelle a/d IJssel, Netherlands), and continued to be supplemented with 35%-40% oxygen overnight.
