This edition has six new tests (the ballottement test, Gerber's test, the painful arc sign, the Thessaly test, the quad active test, and the Lelli test for anterior cruciate ligament injuries); a new evidence section for some tests, listing systematic reviews, meta-analyses, or articles that have addressed their reliability or diagnostic accuracy; and new color images.

Two of the 11 studies highlighted the use of ballottement, or manual cuff palpation, to determine if the tube is at the correct depth.

These included ballottement (present or absent) of fetal parts in the uterine fundus, and of the presenting part in the lower pole of the uterus.

A technique called "abdominal ballottement" can be used where the abdomen is compressed and, if there is free fluid in the abdomen, the organs swing through the abdomen and can be felt by a hand placed on the opposite side of the abdomen.
