The par-5 uphill, second hole has one of the region's largest bunkers just past the dogleg. The par-5 seventh hole requires a decision of whether to go for the green in two over a drained man-made pond in front of the green or to hit to the left of the pond and a cluster of trees to set up a short chip onto the green.
Some holes are straight forward and offer opportunities for par or birdie; others are tricky with dogleg fairways, plateau greens or water hazards to test your accuracy.
"It has changed from 430 yards to 480, there are new bunkers and the fairway has changed direction from dead straight to a dogleg. That now makes the approach shot even more difficult.
A copse of trees on the left side of the soft dogleg gets a lot of action as golfers try to cut the corner and get a shorter shot into the well-bunkered, undulating (and very fast) green.
After a 456-yard opening par-four which requires careful line selection to cut the dogleg, you get an idea of what the Wales National is all about when you play the second.
Had the controller wanted you to fly the dogleg from BUSEY to HODAK as published, the clearance would have been specifically a vector to join a segment of the approach.
