The action is happening at Cullercoats and Cresswell beaches, where the
lugworms can be found in burrows under the sand.
Prof Stuart Jenkins, Capturing Our Coast Principal Investigator, at Bangor University, School of Ocean Sciences, said: "Anyone who takes a walk at low tide on a sandy beach will be familiar with the coiled casts of
lugworms.
The only one to weigh in was Alan Rowe, who fished Whitley Bay beach and, using cocktail of
lugworm and frozen crab, landed a codling of 2lb 9oz.
The East Cleveland angler offered black
lugworm and mussel cocktail.
Fishing from the ledges above Johnson's at Marsden, he took five cod, two of 3lb, one of 5lb, another at 7lb 8oz, topped by a cracker of 13lb 8oz, all falling to
lugworm bait.
Hall Road beach, was fishing with a cocktail bait of squid and
lugworm when she hooked her prize catch, which was released after being photographed.
So I baited up with a cocktail of peeler crab and black
lugworm which would appeal to most fish,'' he said.
Rock edge marks at Newton, Cullernose, Cresswell and Dunstanburgh seeing codling between 1-2lb with only occasional decent fish,
lugworm working well.
Using several combination baits - including ragworm, ammo black
lugworm, squid and razorfish - John was on a hot streak.
"I dropped the bait of razor and
lugworm until it hit bottom, then raised it six inches, and the fish was straight onto it.
Kelly used
lugworm and crab baits near to the 'funnel' and his best fish weighed in at 5lb 12oz.
He caught the cod on a cocktail of
lugworm and ragworm and added some dogfish and whiting for the third best catch of 34lb.
Graham Gillespie fished Blyth Pier to take a cod of 12lb 4oz, David Carrs had a bag of 19lb in total, with the best being a cod of 9lb taken on
lugworm from Seaton Sluice.
"I caught both fish on black
lugworm, cast between 100 and 200 yards out.
Greasby's Lindfield was well clear with six dabs and eight whiting, caught on black
lugworm and crab, for a 6lb 1oz total.
