Using the
polariscope, the researchers measured the optical retardation of the light as it traveled through the glass drop, and then used the data to construct the stress distribution throughout the entire drop.
With a reflection
polariscope (Fig.2a and Fig.2b) a field of photoelastic fringes formed around the hole has been observed and the directions of principal stresses were identified.
We measured in all the specimens the edge stress [[sigma].sub.e] with the
polariscope AP-07 (Glasstress Ltd.), shown in Fig.
Figure [dagger] 1.1 shows the
polariscope where polarization is created by reflection from the glass plate G-G.
The stresses that were transmitted to the supporting structures with each appliance were recorded using digital photography (Nikon D1X, Nikon, Tokyo, Japan) in the field of a circular
polariscope (Figure 3).
The instrument most commonly used to evaluate stresses is a simple
polariscope, or "strain viewer," consisting of a white light source and suitable polarizing elements.
In one of these public lectures, an English crystallographer, lecturing on "The Seven Styles of Crystal Architecture", used a powerful
polariscope to throw "rainbow visions upon the screen at the Walker Theatre".
The identifications were performed on gem rough and cut stones through the application of gemological techniques (refractometer,
polariscope, dichroscope, microscope, heavy liquids, inclusion studies according to the techniques of Eduard Gubelin, etc.), using published data and identified examples in the collections of the author and the Ouro Preto School of Mines as standards for comparison (see Bastos, 1992).
He also described the examination of diabetic urine with a simple
polariscope and with Trommer's test (solutions of caustic potash and copper sulfate).
* Molded-in stress analysis using birefringence (photoelastic) testing: Birefringence tests were performed using a fluorescent tube
polariscope. The polarizing material contained open polars (light passes through both filters).(9) Tests were done on four separate samples of PC: a part from the cold steel mold, a part from the hot steel mold, a part molded from the cold rapid epoxy tool, and a part from the cold rapid epoxy tool that was annealed in an oven for 1 hr at 150 [degrees] C.
Basic gemmological characterization was performed on 46 samples at HRD Antwerp, and included visual observations, RI and hydrostatic SG measurements,
polariscope and dichroscope reactions, hand-held spectroscope absorption spectra, and long- and short-wave UV fluorescence observations.
The average transverse birefringence, < [n.sub.ss] - [n.sub.nn] >, was measured using a Gaertner optical
polariscope (model L305) equipped with a seven-order Babinet compensator (model L-133-A).
In [1] data is described about testing of 360 glass panels by first measuring the residual surface stress with the GASP
polariscope (GASP is registered trademark of Strainoptics Technologies, Inc.) [2].
The model loaded by tightening a nut on the M12 screw through two washers made of Plexiglas was examined in a circular
polariscope. Fig.
In addition, the average birefringence [Less Than Sign]n[theta][theta] - [n.sub.zz][Greater Than Sign] was measured using an optical
polariscope Gaertner model L305.
