1c) the axillary bud of the
prophyll of the enrichment axis generated by the flag leaf, may set a secondary enrichment axis and so on, always with prophyllar origins (Amsler & Vegetti, 1999).
Leaves 2-7.4 mm wide; culms triquetrous; 2-4 sterile scales at the base of the spikelet (excluding the
prophyll); anthers 0.6-1.8 mm long; achene (0.7-)0.81.1 mm wide 2
All branches were subtended by
prophylls. Significant (P [is less than] 0.01) variation occurred among culms within populations for
prophyll length.
Each lateral spikelet emerges from the axillary bud of a bract, bearing a
prophyll and a varying number of glumes arranged on an open axis (rachilla); some or all of these glumes develop an axillary flower, so some taxa have empty glumes, while in other taxa each glume carries a flower.
Inflorescence branching to one order, interfoliar, erect, arching or pendulous, protogynous; peduncle usually elongated, circular to oval in cross section, densely covered in indument, often heavily armed with spines;
prophyll short, bicarinate, fibrous, unarmed or armed with small spines or bristles, hidden in the leaf bases; peduncular bract much exceeding the
prophyll, spindle-shaped, often rostrate, splitting longitudinally along the abaxial face, persistent or eroding, usually densely tomentose, heavily armed with spines or unarmed; rachis shorter than the peduncle bearing spirally arranged rachillae, each sustented by a narrow triangular bract; rachillae ca.
A
prophyll (rudimentary leaf) emerges from the coleoptile.
There have existed a long-standing disagreement in the use of the terms achene and nutlet to refer Carex's fruits, and perigynium and utricle to refer the enclosing
prophyll (Global Carex Group, 2015).
Inflorescences interfoliar, erect to ascending, branched to one order,
prophyll short, bicarinate, fibrous, hidden in leaf bases, peduncular bract prominent, rostrate, densely spiny adaxially, glabrous abaxially, peduncle densely spiny, rachis shorter than peduncle, not spiny, rachis and rachillae covered with a dense wooly-white tomentum, rachillae entirely covered by staminate flowers, these shallowly sunken in pits, pistillate flowers directly inserted at the base of rachilla or directly on main rachis in between staminate rachillae and without evident connection with them.
After sowing, the pots were kept in an opensided greenhouse for 2 d until the
prophyll leaf emerged, and were then moved into the chambers.
paraclade consists of a short hypopodium, a
prophyll, an epipodium and a
Inflorescences 2-6 contemporaneous: female inflorescences 144 cm long in the fruiting stage, branched to 3rd order; peduncle 62-90 cm long, 5,7 cm wide at apex;
prophyll 2-keeled, 31 cm long, inserted 7 cm above the base of the peduncle; the lower peduncular bracts 118-220 cm long, inserted at ca.
In the accessory branches, each of these accessory axes has its own
prophyll, in whose axils a prophyllar branch can be produced.
Each of these axillary shoots bears a
prophyll, a variable number of leaves, and ends in an inflorescence (axillary inflorescence).
A rhipidium is a (cymously) built partial inflorescence in which the
prophyll of a lateral axis subtends a new lateral axis, each axis ending in a flower.
