(Note: A full-time fisherman from Wisconsin's Washington Island, Koyen was the only commercial fisherman who remained and fished for whitefish, a fish that had been decimated by
quagga and zebra mussels in the 1990s.
But from an ecologic viewpoint, the zebra and
quagga mussels are not predatory in the Dnieper, sharing its environment or terrain equally with the local flora and fauna.
While there are a variety of factors that may have contributed to the improvement, the researchers point to the rise of the
quagga mussel which found its way over to the Great Lakes from the Black Sea region as the likeliest reason for improvement.
The
quagga was a subspecies of which animal before it was driven to extinction in 1883?
The Zebra mussel [Dreissena polymorpha (Pallas, 1771)] and
Quagga mussel [Dreissena rostriformis bugensis Andrusov, 1897] are well-known invasive species.
Zequanox molluscicide is a patented, naturally derived aquatic biopesticide that effectively controls all life stages of invasive zebra and
quagga mussels.
The protected areas support a rich diversity of ungulates and potential prey including blue wildebeest Connochaetes taurinus, common warthog Phacochoerus africanus, greater kudu Tragelaphus strepsiceros, impala Aepyceros melampus, nyala Tragelaphus angasii, plains zebra Equus
quagga and waterbuck Kobus ellipsiprymnus.
Rapid increase and subsequent decline of zebra and
quagga mussels in Long Point Bay, Lake Erie: possible influence of waterfowl predation.
In other news, Asian carp are poised to follow zebra and
quagga mussels in the next of a series of biologic invasions threatening to decimate ecological balances, fisheries, and tourism.
These third-party solutions extend to Automation, Network Services, Monitoring, Containers, Inventory Management as well as upstream Linux networking projects such as
Quagga.
There's some speculation that long-tails and other sea ducks have shifted their Great Lakes diet to abundant zebra and
quagga mussels, but there's little data to support that.
There have already been many examples of rewilding projects around the world: the American Prairie Foundation reintroducing bison to the grasslands of the Great Plains in the hopes of creating a preserve bigger than Yellowstone Park; the European Green Belt built along the former Iron Curtain; the Gondwana Link, which aims to regrow native bushland in Australia; the attempt in South Africa to recreate the
quagga, an extinct subspecies of zebra; and the Area de Conservation Guanacaste's restoration of dry tropical forest and rainforest in Costa Rica.
Working Dogs for Conservation trained three dogs for the project: Tia, a German shepherd that has worked on several projects, including rosy wolf snail detection in Hawaii; Lily, a yellow Labrador trained to detect
quagga mussels and white-footed vole scat; and Wicket, a black Labrador mix that recognizes 26 scents, including Chinese moon bear scat.
