Two slate-gray F-15s, gulping fuel, roar up out of the shimmering heat of a runway at Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, Va., then cut in the afterburners and belch fire as they initiate a perfectly coordinated, tandem turn up and to the right.
"I fell like I've been on a submarine for nine months," he says lightly, looking out the window at the slate-gray Canadian sky, streak with freezing rain.
