"You're not good looking every day," insisted Emma Jane; "but you're different
somehow. See my garnet ring; mother scrubbed it in soap and water.
"Not at all silly," said I, losing my temper; "here for example, I take this Square," and, at the word, I grasped a moveable Square, which was lying at hand -- "and I move it, you see, not Northward but -- yes, I move it Upward -- that is to say, not Northward, but I move it somewhere -- not exactly like this, but
somehow --" Here I brought my sentence to an inane conclusion, shaking the Square about in a purposeless manner, much to the amusement of my Grandson, who burst out laughing louder than ever, and declared that I was not teaching him, but joking with him; and so saying he unlocked the door and ran out of the room.
"No," it said; "I've really got to cut down this fence
somehow; it's spoiling all the plants, and no one else here can do it.
Afterwards the master said to me in a shy mumble, "She wouldn't luff up in time,
somehow. What's the matter with her?" And I made no answer.
He had long been thinking of entering the army and would have done so had he not been hindered, first, by his membership of the Society of Freemasons to which he was bound by oath and which preached perpetual peace and the abolition of war, and secondly, by the fact that when he saw the great mass of Muscovites who had donned uniform and were talking patriotism, he
somehow felt ashamed to take the step.
I don't know what sacrifice you mean, but Esther is the girl whom sooner or later,
somehow or other, I am going to make my wife, and when she is my wife, I shall see to it that she isn't afraid of Miles Fentolin or of any other man breathing."
But
somehow I dropped off at last, and knew nothing more till break of day; when, looking over the bedside, there squatted Queequeg, as if he had been screwed down to the floor.
It took her but an instant to bend her face and kiss him, and something in the manner of it, and in the way her hands clasped and locked his head while he felt the cool charity and virtue of her lips, something in all this beatitude
somehow answered everything.
The reading, however,
somehow went on pretty constantly, and no doubt my love for it won me a chance for it.
Here was a man, who could not spell, and did not care to read--who had the habits and the cunning of a boor: whose aim in life was pettifogging: who never had a taste, or emotion, or enjoyment, but what was sordid and foul; and yet he had rank, and honours, and power,
somehow: and was a dignitary of the land, and a pillar of the state.
But as my little conductress, with her hair of gold and her frock of blue, danced before me round corners and pattered down passages, I had the view of a castle of romance inhabited by a rosy sprite, such a place as would
somehow, for diversion of the young idea, take all color out of storybooks and fairytales.
But did you deeply scan him in his more secret confidential hours; when he thought no glance but one was on him; then you would have seen that even as Ahab's eyes so awed the crew's, the inscrutable Parsee's glance awed his; or
somehow, at least, in some wild way, at times affected it.
But Sandy was radiant; and was going to be eloquent -- but I stopped her, and told her my magic had mis- carried,
somehow or other, and she must mount, with all despatch, and we must ride for life.
I tried for the hooks three or four times, but
somehow I couldn't make it work.
Even now, so many years later, all this is
somehow a very evil memory.
