synset

This module maps query phrases with ontology concepts via WordNet [31] synsets (synonym sets) by assigning the structured meanings of the ontology to plain text.

Each word is grouped with other words that have the same meaning in a group called Synset. Each Synset is organized under a concept, and it is related to other synset with lexical or semantic relations.

In the project LOIS (Peters et alii 2007), a multilingual database of legal terminology built on the WordNet model, monolingual wordnets are autonomously created and then mapped to the others by means of the Inter-Lingual-Index (ILI), a set of equivalence relations of each concept (synset) with an English synset.

In WordNet, words are organized according to Synset, which include not only synonyms, but also hypernyms (broader categories), hyponyms (narrower categories), meronyms (part-to-whole relationships), and more.

The IS-A relation is based on the path length similarity between synset [21].
