We are teased with the seeming directness of "the real," displayed right there before us, just as Restany promised--and yet we are foiled by the impossibility of accessing that real as anything other than a flat image.

The museum claimed that the silver and gem-studded
vitrine is 'the most lavish piece of silverwork known from the Wiener Werkstatte [or Vienna Workshops], a guild of artists and craftsmen practicing in Austria in the early 20th century.'
