They're rock-solid Crayfords, with slow motion provided by
worm gears and fast motion provided by a crank that lets you turn the
worm gear more quickly.
This is particularly true of the large, costly brass
worm gears on the 13 tube forming gearboxes.
When installing the
worm gear, make sure its teeth mate up with the teeth on the vertical drive shaft.
